Chassis Removal

Post by The Gomersalls » Wed, 18 Apr 2018, 10:15 am

We are coming to the stage where our Portafold could do with the body coming off the chassis so the chassis can have a full overhauls and look at the body to chassis mounting points for condition. Has anyone any tips for removing the chassis with the van complete i.e roof sides and ends still attached to the hull? Looking forward to any comments you can share.

I would ask if it’s completely necessary to remove it completely? Basically, in the factory they glassed over the bolt fittings to add more strength. If you want to detach it you’ll have to cut a load of GRP out of the way to gain access to the fixings. Not the biggest job in the world, but it’ll be a pain.

I’ve only ever seen one chassis that required welding, and that was only because it had been left basically in a pond. If you can strip and paint in situ, that would be my choice.

I've been under with the same intention as you - taking the chassis off.

I decided that angle grinder with wire brush was more than enough - its pretty solid stuff, so am painting it in situ. Also meant it gave me more time to do other things on it!
